“Stand Down” Week 21 – Looking Back is Blinding
At the top of the staircase down which Zain resides, the camera moving just above the blinding gas, the four guards can be seen. From right-to-left, their designations are: Hydraulics, Cloud, Decibel and Ronnie.
Hydraulics is hunched, already made massive by the plating on his torso, but brought to be larger still by the chrome mechanisms ringing his arms and wiring to another on his back. The mechanisms together are reminiscent of a powerloader exoskeleton, though sized down. He is currently hunched over, his exhaustion and frustration both coming through clearly even through his respirator.
HYDRAULICS: God damn, this stuff is heavy.
CLOUD: It’s your own fault you couldn’t find the leg pieces!
HYDRAULICS: There were leg pieces!?
Cloud is much slimmer, though still tall, residing near the group’s back; farthest from the stairwell. Her gas-mask seems more complex than those of the others, and a sling at her sides hold multiple more canisters just like that which was earlier thrown down the stairs. Mounted on her back, a much larger canister.
Decibel is also large in his own right, though not so well-armored as Hydraulics. The black mesh over his face covers his entire body under his riot gear, with headphones bulging out from beneath it. Planting it down on the ground with a loud series of clacks and clangs, he exhales hard as he frees his hands from the thick tripod of a massive set of what seem to be speakers.
DECIBEL: I can’t hear anyone right now, but I just know ‘Gar– er– Hydraulics– is complaining about that suit. I lifted this little number all the way over here, and you don’t hear me complaining!
RONNIE: (mumbling) It’s got wheels.
Ronnie is just sort of there, being smaller and more lightly armored than all the rest, and armed with only a pistol.
A roar, one we’ve heard before, sounds out from down the obscured stairwell. Somehow the sounds of shattering glass therein communicate anger. Following the echoing yell that shocks the guards into silence, Zain ca be heard to call out, his voice cracking as he does:
ZAIN: Would you guys fuck off?! I’m just trying to find Jordan!
At this, Cloud steps forward towards the stairs. She puts her hands up at either side, still holding a canister in one, whilst looking to her companions in a sort of “let me try something” gesture.
CLOUD: We have your friend, Zain! Comply, and he’ll be fine by the end of this!
There is silence from the smoky well.
CLOUD: There’s a version of this situation where no-one gets hurt, let’s try and stick to that timeline!
Zain calls out again, calmer this time.
ZAIN: You’re not messing with me, right? You haven’t read my file, and’re using some psychoanalysis shit to trick me?
At this point, a low, erratic creaking can be heard from within the stairwell, as if metal is being stressed.
Cloud can be seen to flick a switch on her goggles, with her vision going green as she is now beginning to see in some sort of thermal imaging. A spot can be seen lit up down the well.
CLOUD: No, of course not! I’m just a grunt, I don’t know anything about you, except some of your weird powers! I haven’t even seen your file!
The groaning ends in a sort of metallic clap, as if the metal had just been broken. A moment of silence overtakes the scene, broken by Zain:
ZAIN: …Then how’d you say my name right?
In Cloud’s POV, Zain’s “thermal” form comes into view, his back being towards them. He whips quickly around towards her party, a much larger entity behind him flinging something towards them.
Yelling as she dives for cover, Cloud hits the ground as a full, metal stair-panel comes flying out from the gas, missing everyone by a long shot and embedding itself in the ceiling.
Zain yells, a havy metallic banging obviously indicating his rushed, clumsy ascent up the stairs towards the guards.
ZAIN: Fuckin’ lying to me! I’ll kill you all!
Meanwhile, we see Jordan’s cell: the guards that had been harrying him, led by goggles, are crouched around the hole he’d escaped down.
In goggles’ hands is a map, seemingly displaying the entire site’s structure. He drags his finger across the graphic of what seems to be a sewer-system which ends at some sort of natural basin in the mountains. He displays this to the other guards.
GOGGLES: Alright; he’s gone down into the sewer system, and it’s likely that he plans to exit through this bit at the end into the mountains.
A feral scream sounds out from in the sewers, having been distorted by the tube it was travelling up into an echoey mess. It’s Jordan’s voice.
GUARD TERRY: He’s not gone anywhere! Can we please just drown him in ‘nades?!
The guard named Charleen elbows him in the ribs.
GOGGLES: We secure and contain, jackass. There was a reason we only shot up his legs.
GOGGLES: It’s just our good luck, though–
Goggles points at several places along the sewer-system on the map.
GOGGLES: That the foundation takes a very green stance on disposing of their waste.
The focus of the shot drifts down into the breach, reaching the bottom of the dark pit to see Jordan.
His breathing is ragged and labored, and he’s clutching at one of his legs as he bends over it.
Smoke is slowly rising from this leg, and Scorched ‘El can be seen half-manifested behind him.
A closer look at the leg shows that the jumpsuit’s pants have been melted onto it, indenting somehow as it and his flesh slough into and over his many warped wounds. Jordan lets out a feverish hiccup as the molten fabric burns through his skin, stopping most of his bleeding. A great deal of his flesh can be seen melting off entirely, falling in wet, half-liquefied chunks into puddles of Scorcho sauce.
Jordan can be seen to clench his teeth, his determination showing through his tears as he turns to his other leg. Scorched ‘El manifests fully, levelling one of its cannons at it.
